As you can see from the picture, the lab was a little bit crowded. Thus, PLEASE register/tell the organizer prior to the next discussion session, so we can organize it better by finding a spacy place or prepare enough FOOD for all participant. Mapping and Analysis using GIS software
Dear All,
As we had heard the talks by Lee Shan Kee and Lin Kai Ling, of which an important aspect in their research is to map the distribution and diversity of the organism. Elora Poukin will be showing us (the mapping of) the firefly distribution during the different sampling seasons.
We decided "Mapping and Analysis using GIS software" to be the topic in our first session of discussion group, as requested by Wong Mum Keng (the only request that we received so far).
Cornelius and Liew will show you how to do a map by using a state-of-the-art software ArcGIS v. 9.2. This software is just a little bit easier than Photoshop and a little bit harder than powerpoint. Thus everyone can DIY (do it yourself!)
This kind of training course can cost you several thousand RM and consultancy fee that need be paid to professional mapper can cost around RM 100-200 per hour. This is an opportunity $free$ for those who want to learn how to do a digital map.
This is a "cooking program" intended as a training course to aid beginners in creating digital map from hard-copy map or GPS. It assumes basic familiarity with personal computer.
Please register yourself ASAP (by posting your comment after this post), so we can confirm with Mr. Zulhazman when we will need the GIS lab. This exercise is tentatively scheduled on 25 JULY, FRIDAY, 2-5pm, GIS Lab. ITBC.

ITBC's RESEARCH DISCUSSION GROUP
- For postgraduate student: please be informed there will be no more 'personal' statistical consultancy (by Henry or Liew).
- For those who need help (in your research, anything), please present your questions/problems/proposal during 3Ts or research discussion group
- Supervisor please make yourself available, statement like "I don't know what/how to do, please ask so and so" will only dishearten the student. For most the the research problems, we can work it out together.
- All the postgraduate students who want to learn things - PLEASE ATTEND - Learning things together and sharing knowledge would be more fun!
- Lecturer, who think they can provide help, please - attend.
- Please check the Google Calendar for the 'discussion topic' of the week.
